Less complicated than you might think: a filling knife and a scraper can look alike, both can have the same handle, both have the same blade shape and both are usually made from stainless steel, but filling knives have a thinner, more flexible blade which is more effective for pushing filler into holes, cracks and crevices. Scrapers have a thicker blade that is better for scraping material away and can give you some purchase when you have a tricky surface to prep.
Whilst you’ll settle on a favourite go-to size of both tools for general use, it’s handy to have different sizes available, as filling and scraping jobs come in all sizes from filling the smallest of pinholes to removing grout and much more. Both have variations: filling knives become filling blades or caulking blades at larger widths, and scrapers become heavy duty versions for tough surfaces.
